With an electrifying atmosphere, Bibi Ji offers residents and visitors alike, of The American Riviera, an approachable and modern twist on traditional Indian cuisine. Located on historic State Street in Downtown Santa Barbara, surrounded by fine wine tasting rooms, handcrafted artisanal shops, and contemporary art galleries, the critically-acclaimed restaurant opened its doors in February 2018 and has quickly become a community staple. A short stroll from Stearns Wharf and the pristine beaches along the Santa Barbara waterfront, the extensive list of natural, sustainably and organically farmed wines, is the perfect way to settle into any night while on the private back patio enjoying the fresh ocean air or inside the spacious restaurant designed with a vibrant, eclectic décor.
Owners Alejandro Medina and James Beard award-winning sommelier Rajat Parr, along with Executive Chef Gary Singh, offer a menu that highlights the abundance of local seafood served sea-to-table with traditional Indian coconut curries, a bounty of fresh produce harvested from the region cooked in Indian spices, and a Chef’s Tasting culling favorite dishes from the team including selections from their new take on conventional Indian ‘street food,’ ‘tandoor & grill,’ ‘naan & sides,’ and a thali platter of curries. A highlight of the creative dishes offered at Bibi Ji include a Santa Barbara Uni Biryani, Mr. Tso’s Cauliflower, Paneer Tikka Sliders, and Kulfi Popsicle.
At Bibi Ji, all senses go with the rich and dazzling colors on each plate, fresh and exotic aromas, playful neon lighting, and enlivened sounds. With an atmosphere and menu unlike anything else in Central California, Bibi Ji is not your typical Indian joint and this year, was included in The New York Time’s “52 Places to Go in 2019.”

But there must be some reason why her name is the one most associated with Santa Barbara sea urchin, four reverently whispered words in the community. And why the urchins harvested by her and her business partner, Harry Liquornik, are known as "California Gold."
